Field Notes: Deer Steward 1, A Course That Truly Impressed Me

Recently, I completed the National Deer Association Deer Steward 1 course, and I can honestly say I walked away extremely impressed.

Even coming from a wildlife biology background with formal education focused on wildlife and fisheries management the course provided a tremendous amount of valuable information, perspective, and practical application. That alone says a lot about the quality of the material and the people behind it.

The course does an outstanding job of tying together deer biology, habitat management, herd health, hunting pressure, forestry, nutrition, and conservation into one complete system. Rather than focusing on shortcuts or trends it emphasizes understanding deer and habitat through science-based management and long-term stewardship.

One thing I appreciated most was how approachable the information was. Whether someone is a lifelong hunter, a new landowner, a public land hunter, or simply interested in wildlife conservation, the course presents information in a way that is both understandable and genuinely useful.

There were multiple moments throughout the course where I found myself thinking, “More people in the hunting and outdoor community should hear this.”

The Deer Steward program reinforces something I strongly believe in which is good conservation starts with education. Better understanding of deer, habitat, and how the ecosystem functions will help to create better hunters, better land managers, and ultimately better stewardship of the resource itself.

I also fully intend to continue through the program and pursue Deer Steward 2 in the future. After completing Deer Steward 1, I can confidently say the program has exceeded my expectations and has reinforced just how valuable continuing education and conservation-focused training can be within the outdoor community.

I would absolutely recommend Deer Steward 1 to anyone interested in:

  • Whitetail deer

  • Habitat improvement

  • Hunting strategy and deer behavior

  • Wildlife conservation

  • Land management

  • Forestry and habitat interactions

  • Becoming more knowledgeable and effective outdoors

Huge respect to the National Deer Association and everyone involved in building the program. It is one of the best educational hunting and conservation courses I have taken.
