Field Notes: Slate Turkey Call Review, Realistic Sound Right Out of the Box
A closer look at the legend slate call setup from WoodHaven Custom Calls, including pot call, strikers, and conditioning kit.
Right out of the box, the call sounded great.
The pot and striker quality stood out immediately. The wood looks good. Feels solid in hand. Nothing about it feels cheap.
Sound-wise, I’m impressed. The tone is clean and carries well. With a little practice, you can start producing realistic hen sounds pretty quickly.
Edge habitat setup during early spring. Ideal mix of cover and open ground for calling.
It’s also very forgiving for a beginner. It didn’t take long to start getting consistent clucks and yelps.
First day out with it I had a hen come in to investigate, which was a great sign right away. Second day I had gobblers responding, but couldn’t quite get them to commit. Even so, hearing that response early on gave me a lot of confidence in the call.
Hen responding to calling on day one. First real test of the slate call.
One thing that became clear early on is how important surface prep is with a slate call.
The included conditioning pad works well and makes it easy to freshen up the surface and striker tips. A quick touch up makes a noticeable difference in sound.
One mistake I made was using too much pressure.
Too much pressure will smooth out your striker tip faster than you expect. Once that happens, your sound drops off.
Another lesson learned, always bring your conditioning kit with you.
If your surface or striker gets smooth in the field, you basically don’t have a call anymore.
Overall, I’ve been very impressed with the Legend Slate from WoodHaven Custom Calls.
It’s easy to pick up, sounds good right away, and still has plenty of room for more advanced use as you improve.
A short sound test of a slate turkey call during early practice. This is my first slate call, working on basic yelps, clucks, and purrs while learning proper pressure and movement.
Also don’t judge my purrs, I am still working on them! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I would comfortably recommend it to beginners looking to learn a slate call, as well as more experienced callers who want a reliable, realistic sounding option.
